As solar heat warms the ground, air currents rise to form cumulonimbus clouds, so-called thunderclouds. At altitudes above 5 km, the air temperature is below freezing, so atmospheric moisture turns into tiny ice particles. Collisions between these particles generate friction charges, so the upper part of the cloud has a positive charge, and the lower part has a negative charge, eventually resulting in an electrical discharge.
